Welcome the Classic Modifieds website.

The Classic Modifieds are a completely new and unique formula running at the independently promoted Swaffham Raceway in Norfolk. The driving force behind the formula comes from the man who has played a strategic role in the success of the Historic Saloon Stockcars, Dave Gabriel. His initial concept placed a very heavy bias on developing a formula that was fun, inexpensive, appealed equally to the drivers and the paying public and wrapped up with a shed full of nostalgia.

With this in mind the emerging formula has materialised as pre1966 cars, V6 powered, running on retro high profile slicks and lightly ironed out for limited contact! The look and design of the cars draws heavily on the early Speed and Economy cars raced at Hednesford in the 1970’s together with an influence from the 1970’s American Ministox’s and Modifieds.

Over the past few years there has been a rapid upsurge in interest in all forms of ‘retro’ motor sport. This formula unlike many of the classic formulas is not a duplication of the past but is a blend of retro looks with modern day performance. Swaffham’s racing director Shawn Mason who is gaining a reputation of introducing positive change was quick to see the benefits of a Classic formula and welcomed the Classic Modifieds to their line up.

As a fun formula it is important to keep the cars as evenly matched as possible, keeping the racing close and keeping the cost down. With this in mind a ‘one engine type’ rule has been adopted together with welded differentials, no special gearboxes, live axle (no IRS) and limited contact (Nudge only) to reduce racing damage.

Although this is a fun formula and the cars are the stars, it is not a show formula, everybody recognises that as soon as the green flags drops every man wants to be the first to see the black and white chequers. However, to keep every one on an even playing field, the rules will be actively enforced by the Swaffham team with a strong influence from the drivers reps. Its clear that this formula will not be allowed to develop into a one or two car grid where cheque book racing dominates the field.

Two cars were on display at Swaffham’s Speed weekend in July 2009 Dave Gabriel’s Mk1 Cortina and Mark Tegerdine’s 105e Anglia. They created a great deal of interest, both from potential drivers and the spectators. As a result we now have 10 drivers due to make their debut in Classic Modifieds in 2010.

The Modifieds promise to deliver fast, close, noisy and high energy Classic entertainment. There will be no blue flag used as the front bumper will ensure that the racing will not be a procession.
